What is the SAFE Act in trucking?

The Safety and Accountability in Freight Enforcement (SAFE) Act is proposed federal legislation introduced by U.S. Senators Todd Young and Andy Kim to address the problem of “chameleon carriers.” The legislation is intended to strengthen the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s ability to identify motor carriers that attempt to avoid safety violations, penalties, or other regulatory consequences by shutting down and registering under a new identity. It also calls for a Government Accountability Office study examining chameleon carriers and their impact on the trucking industry.
