Geary and Becky Buchanan of Buchanan Hauling and Rigging

Buchanan Hauling & Rigging, Inc. is an asset-based trucking company founded by Geary Buchanan in June 1996. What began with one truck and two trailers has grown into a nationwide transportation operation supporting businesses with dry van, flatbed, expedited, specialized, heavy haul, and managed logistics services.

In 2026, Buchanan celebrates 30 years in business. The company has grown through long-term relationships with customers, investment in people and equipment, and a commitment to the values that have guided the business since the beginning.

From One Truck to an Asset-Based Trucking Company

Before founding Buchanan Hauling & Rigging, Geary Buchanan spent years behind the wheel as an owner-operator. That experience helped shape a transportation company built around practical operating knowledge and an understanding of what drivers, customers, and freight operations require from a carrier.

Buchanan started with one truck and two trailers. Today, the company's transportation operations are supported by more than 200 power units and more than 900 trailers, providing equipment options for standard truckload freight as well as freight requiring open-deck, specialized, or heavy haul configurations.

Being asset-based gives Buchanan direct involvement in fleet operations, drivers, dispatch, equipment, maintenance, and transportation execution. Learn more about what that structure means for customers in our Asset-Based Freight Transportation guide.

Buchanan's Fleet and Transportation Capabilities

Buchanan's equipment and transportation capabilities support a wide range of commercial freight. Depending on the shipment, customers can work with Buchanan for:

  • Dry Van Transportation: Enclosed truckload service for palletized, packaged, retail, manufacturing, and other commercial freight.
  • Flatbed and Open-Deck Transportation: Freight requiring side, rear, or top loading, including construction materials, machinery, steel, and industrial products.
  • Expedited Freight: Transportation options for shipments with shortened schedules and time-critical requirements.
  • Specialized Transportation: Equipment and planning for over-dimensional, unusually configured, and other freight requiring more than a standard truckload solution.
  • Heavy Haul Transportation: Specialized equipment and project planning for oversized and overweight freight.
  • 3PL Managed Logistics: Buchanan's in-house transportation management capabilities for customers requiring additional capacity, planning, and coordination.

Safety and Integrity at the Center of the Company

Buchanan's company motto, “Setting the Standard for Safety, One Mile at a Time,” reflects the role safety plays throughout the operation. Driver qualification, equipment maintenance, training, load planning, securement, regulatory compliance, and day-to-day operating decisions all contribute to the company's safety culture.

Buchanan Hauling & Rigging currently maintains a Satisfactory federal motor carrier safety rating, with the rating in effect since May 16, 2011.

Safety is one part of a larger set of company values built around Determination, Integrity, Safety, and Community. Learn more about Buchanan's D.I.S.C. values on our Mission and Values page.

Customer Relationships Built on Communication

Freight transportation depends on communication between the shipper, carrier, driver, dispatch team, receiving location, and other parties involved in the shipment. Buchanan's goal is to provide customers with clear communication and direct access to people who understand their freight and transportation requirements.
